Welsh Environmental Schemes

Welsh Environmental SchemesThere have been a number of environmental schemes operating in Wales. The rich mosaic of habitats across Wales exists as a result of farming practices and other land uses over the centuries.

Cattle and sheep are both important in the management of certain habitats. Without grazing management certain habitats become overgrown, and plant species and their associated animal species would disappear.

Cambrian organics are a part of the following environmental schemes. They identify valuable habitats, and in consultation with the farmer sympathetic management practices and stocking rates are agreed, firstly to conserve the habitat and then to improve it.

Tir Gofal is a wide-ranging "whole farm" scheme in which all the farm must come within the scheme rules. Valuable habitats are improved under this scheme, and there is provision for the reversion of improved farmland to semi-improved or unimproved land. Voluntary aspects of the scheme allow, for example, for the creation of “streamside corridors” by excluding stock, and the provision of new footpaths and areas of free public access.

The Forestry Commission have for many years had schemes for the planting of woodland, these contribute to the costs of planting and management, especially for deciduous woods. They also have schemes to encourage the proper management of older woodland.
